Robins Egg Blue

PictureGreat example & a great book!
It’s a little known fact that robins lay blue eggs.  They are photographed often for their pretty color.  House wrens lay brown speckled eggs.  So why do two different birds lay two different colored eggs?  Because they are just that: different kinds of birds.  This is also true of different kinds of chickens.  Currently at Sew & Water we have several different kinds of chickens.  Those different kinds of chickens lay different colored eggs.

Most of our chickens lay brown eggs.  We are raising some young leghorns {known for being really active chickens} which will be our first chickens to lay white eggs at Sew & Water.  Our theory is that since the leghorns are so active they will eat more bugs and grass than most chickens and their yolks will be even better.  Although I think the Ameraucanas will always be my favorites; I love their beards {are you seeing a trend?}.

So, are brown eggs healthier than white eggs? What is the difference between the colors? Have you ever heard someone say to a pregnant lady ‘a healthy mom makes a healthy baby’? We believe a healthy chicken makes a healthy egg.  Our eggs are not better for you because they are brown or blue, our eggs are better because we raise our chickens in a healthy way.

Our girls are on open pasture with the choice of eating green grass, leafy vegetation, bugs and worms and getting plenty of sunshine & exercise.  We believe our healthy chickens make healthier eggs.  They are different colored eggs just because they are different kinds of chickens {and because I like the way the colorful eggs look in our egg skelter}.  Enjoy!

This is where I {erin} will throw in some thoughts, what we’re learning and what’s coming out of our beautiful mess of a life and mess of a sewing room.
